Natural Tick prevention tips in the Hamptons

IMG_4968Eastern Long Island is at High Risk for Lyme Disease. May through September are the highest risk months due to intense nymphal activity. Make sure you are taking the proper steps for tick prevention! Below is some information from lectures I have been to in Sag Harbor with Lyme literate doctors and my own research.

Ticks hate the scent of lavender. Use soaps, detergents, shampoo, etc. Put dryer sheets in kids pockets. I really like Dr. Bronner’s Pure Castile Soap. This soap made out of all natural ingredients and is very versatile. See this soap’s multipe uses at the end of this article.

  • For Laundry- 1/3 cup soap in large load. Add 1/2 cup vinegar in rise cycle
  • Body Wash: one small squirt applied to wet hands or loofah
  • For Shaving
  • Other uses for Dr. Bronner Lavender Soap (good to have this smell in your home)
    • All Purpose Cleaner: add 1/4 cup of soap to quart of water in spray bottle
    • Dishes: Dilute 1:10 with water for hand-washed dishes.
    • Fruit & Veggie Wash: A dash in bowl f water to remove reside
  • Use dried lavender sachets in clothing drawers.

  • Treat your shoes. Your feet is where ticks usually first come in contact with you.
    • Spray BUG OFF on your shoes & you can also use it as an air freshener, on your bedroom sheets and pillow, in your hair body spray and clothing spray. When applying to your skin, shake well before EACH spray. Spray into hands and then run onto skin. When applying to hair, clothes etc: Shake well before EACH spray and spray. BUG OFF is non greasy so is perfect for this!
  • For a stronger clothing repellent- use permethrin (use monthly) to ward off ticks and killing any that come in contact with your clothing. You can purchase impregnated permethrin clothing or do it yourself. This is not all natural.
  • Avoid sitting on the ground or on stone walls. Avoid where ticks live: tall grasses, stay in the center of paths, etc.
  • If you are going in a wooded area, wear pants and sneakers. Tuck socks into pants.

Tips for the yard:

  • Wood Chip Border: Ticks will rarely cross a 3 foot wood chip border, use liberally around your property
  • Cedar Mulch & Bags of Cypress. Buy Both and Mix them
  • INSECTICIDES: Treat your property with a product called “Damminix”. This consists of cardboard tubes containing cotton balls that have been dipped in insecticide. Place these tubes around your property in the wooded areas and below shrubs.
  • Mice transmit the most ticks that make people sick. Prevent Mice with these tips:
    • Use Damminix and Permethrin on cotton balls. Use cotton balls in/near mice burrows around yard.
  • Prevent Deer from entering property with a tall fence
  • Remove wood piles, rock walls, and bird feeders as these attract tick-carrying animals and can increase the risk of acquiring Lyme.
  • A 3-foot wood chip border around your yard helps prevent tick spread.
  • Get your yard sprayed. There are companies in the Hamptons and other parts of Long Island offering Organic Pesticides
  • Plant Lavender plants around your yard.

Biomagnetism-Holistic Treatment

Biomagnetic Therapy is using high-strength magnets to balance and alkalinize the body systems. This therapy was developed in 1988 by Mexican doctor Isaac Goiz. He clinically defined the location of biomagnetic pairs where pH disturbances occur in the body as a result of infection from common pathogens including viruses, bacteria, fungus, parasites and other toxins.

A large number of illnesses are associated with alterations in the PH level in organs and tissues and with the presence of viruses, bacteria, fungi, toxins and parasites. By contrast, a balanced PH level contribute to restore and maintain optimal health.

What is PH?

According to Phountain Health, A PH number measures for 0-14. 0 is acid, 14 is alkaline and 7 is neutral.

In order to have good healimage16th, one should have the right acid/alkaline balance in the body. Humans should strive to have a PH level between 7-8. The pH level of internal fluids affects the cells in the human’s body. Acidic imbalances in the internal environment can lead to health problems. An acidic body is common in today’s society due to stress, poor diet, not exercising enough and in some cases, over exercising. When our body becomes acidic, essential minerals such as potassium, sodium, magnesium and calcium may be taken from our vital organs and bones to combat or buffer the acid. When the pH in ones body gets out of balance or too acidic, we may experience l ow energy, fatigue, poor digestion, excess weight, aches and pains, or more serious health conditions.
The process of re-balancing the acid/alkaline in your body begins with proper diet and nutrition. This includes eating alkaline foods such as vegetables and low sugar fruits, hydration from drinking plenty of alkaline water, and proper supplementation.

Biomagnetism is also capable of reestablishing the acidic-alkaline balance in the organism and restore health. Biomagnetism targets the fix the cause of the problem and not just one’s symptoms, as drugs usually attempt to fix one’s symptoms. The problem trying to fix only a symptom is, one symptom might be fixed by a drug for a select period of time and since the underlying problem has not been resolved, another symptom due to the same elemental problem can pop up in one’s body.

BioMagnetism uses pairs of magnets of opposite polarity to depolarize areas in the body that are unbalanced due to pathogens or other factors that resonate energetically, in consequence causing harm.

Biomagnetism is a preventative therapy as well as a healing therapy. It is able to detect, diagnose and correct an abnormal condition before its symptomatic occurrence.

How does Biomagnetism work?

Living organisms maintain their systems, organs and tissues in an amazing energetic equilibrium.  Cells need the appropriate environment to be able to live and correctly carry out their many functions.

The ionic balance of + and – charges present in the cells and their environment plays an imperative role in ensuring a well functioning cellular environment. Pathogenic phenomenons occur when there are distortions in the balance of the PH level.

What to expect during the session?

During a session of the Biomagnetic Pair, the practitioner places pairs of magnets of opposite charges (+ and -) on specific areas of the patient’s body which is determined by the practitioner through a trained process. The objective of the specific placement of the magnets is to balance the patients pH level.

The patient will then lay still and relax after the magnets have been placed on their body. The session will take about 1 hour. During the session, I felt calm and relaxed.

How many sessions are needed?

According to Biomagnetism.net, the number of sessions necessary to achieve full healing will depend on many factors like the kind of illness, how chronic it is and the patient’s response. Everyone’s body is unique. Differentiating results could be due to age, build, metabolism, lifestyle, nutritional state, mental state, toxin burden, and immune system. Additionally, how long one has been ill and the damage that has occurred in the body and previously administered medications will also vary the results of biomagnetism.

Sometimes the patient will start to notice positive changes in their health after one session. On average, with a sequence of three or four sessions, one per week, one should see a great improvement in the majority of cases. For chronic cases, four, five or more sessions may be the necessary protocol.

My personal experience

I have received biomagnetic therapy five times. The first time I received it, I had a very intense acupuncture a few days prior to the biomagnetism session. Two days after the biomagnetic therapy treatment, I became very sick with the flu. It was the sickest I ever was with the flu. I am not sure if this was some type of herx reaction (herxheimer reaction) due to the biomagnetic therapy combined with the acupuncture or if it was just a coincidence since it was January and flu season. I do not recommend getting both of these treatments so close together since both are supposed to balance the energy in your body, moving things around at too dramatic of a rate. That being said , fever is actaully good for us since it is the bodies natural way of killing of harmful substances in the body. In western culture it is popular for people to try and hop on antibiotics to get better quickly. However, it is smart to ride out the fever so your body can kill of bacteria and other harmful pathogens. In Europe “Hyperthermia” is a popular treatment which is a self-induced fever popular amongst Lyme and Cancer patients.

“Thermotherapy” Heat Therapy to get through the Winter

This article was published in Andrea Ashley Magazine Winter 2017 Isuue https://andreaashley.ca/magazine

During the winter months, many of us struggle to get through the days which have a limited amount of sunlight and cold weather. The cold weather has a strong effect on our bodies. It tightens muscles, causes more muscle pain, muscle spasms, muscle knots, joint pain and less circulation. “A cold breeze blowing across an already-energy-deficient muscle will throw it into shortening, and shortened muscles can be a primary and key cause of pain,” says Jacob Teitelbaum, MD director of The Annapolis Center for Effective Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Fibromyalgia Therapies. Also, changes in temperature or barometric pressure, a measure that refers to the weight of the surrounding air can trigger joint pain (Goodman).

Below are some of my favorite methods I use to get through the cold winter months in New York.

Biomat: A BioMat uses far infrared rays which penetrate deeply into the body and address imbalances at the cellular level. You can adjust the heat on the mat to your liking and then simply lay down on it. It feels as if you are being warmed up from the inside and is ideal on cold days. It can be used to help with a wide range of health issues, including relieving minor muscle pain, joint pain and stiffness, increasing blood circulation, reducing stress and more.

Sauna: There are many benefits of using a sauna including detoxification, muscle and joint pain relief, increase of circulation, reduction of inflammation, lowering of blood pressure, weight loss and skin purification. “It causes you to sweat and can help release endorphins,” says David Geirer, MD, a sports medicine specialist in Charleston, South Carolina. “And the heat also increases blood flow to the muscle and the periphery of the body, which helps sore muscles feel better temporarily.” Physical therapist Patrick Walsh states that heat therapy is usually reserved for treating older injuries or chronic muscle or joint pain, like arthritis. (MacMillen). Stretching in the sauna gets a deeper stretch and muscles will loosen up quicker. It can be like a mini hot yoga class.

Steam room: The steam room can help with winter congestion, colds and sinus infections. Breathe in the steam with eucalyptus essential oil on a towel to help with any type of respiratory infection.
Hot Detox Bath. There are many types of detox baths that can be taken. My favorite in the winter time in order to relieve pain and muscle cramps is a hot epsom salt bath. It is great for detoxification and also good for after a hard workout. Epsom salt helps to detoxify your body by making you sweat out toxins. Also, you will absorb some of the minerals and trace minerals found in the salt such as magnesium. Stay in bath for 25-35 minutes and make sure to have a water bottle next to you to stay hydrated since the salt pulls out water from your body. Submerge your whole body up to your chin to receive the most benefits. Take the bath before bed time since it makes you tired, but make sure to shower after bathing to get off any excess sweat and bacteria. This bath can be taken one to two times a week and more once your body adjusts (Morrison 138).

Essential Oil Diffuser:
Essential Oil Diffusers provide an excellent method of calming and moisturizing to build a healthy, natural, warm, and pure living environment. Use eucalyptus essential oil to help with congestion, to control coughing, or to sooth a sore throat. This oil is perfect for boosting concentration and for keeping your energy level elevated. It is great for dark, cold or rainy winter days when extra stimulation is much needed.
Heat Pads: Selective heating, also known as local hyperthermia, of affected joints with hot packs can be very beneficial in treating chronic aching and dysfunctional joints and muscles. The best type of heating pads are clay heating pads which is heated up in the microwave. Stay away from electrical heating pads because they expose you to Electromagnetic Fields also known as EMF (Storl 193).

Hot tea: Cold fruit smoothies are refreshing on a hot summer day, but in the winter our bodies crave something warm. Consuming a hot drink will heat up your whole body. My favorite tea mix in the winter acts as a natural antibiotic. Whenever I feel like I am getting sick, my go-to tea remedy is a mix of raw manuka honey, black pepper, turmeric, coconut oil, ginger, lemon, apple cider vinegar, garlic, oregano. Also, warm water and lemon is easy to make with many health and detoxing benefits.

Ionic Foot Bath

FullSizeRender (2).jpg

It is difficult to find reliable sources on the Ionic Foot Bath. I usually like to source all of my blogs from reliable sources. For this particular article, I will state some information on what an Ionic Foot Bath is and my own experience with them.

What is an Ionic foot baths?

In simple terms: Removes toxins by generating positive and negative ions which are able to attach themselves to impurities that are oppositely charged in your feet.

In more detailed terms: The bath operates through a process called electrolysis. In this process, an electrical current is generated within the foot bath water which causes the molecules of water to divide producing negative ions. Once an abundance of these negative ions are present in the foot bath water, the body then absorbs the ions through osmosis, which is the movement of particles through a membrane from a higher concentration to a lower concentration. In this case, the higher concentration refers to the negative ions produced by the ion field that is set up by placing electrodes into the water. As the vast majority of foreign contaminate matter found on the feet and within the body is positively charged, including such matter as harmful chemicals, heavy metals, parasites and other such materials, the negative ions are attracted to the positively charged foreign contaminates and bind with those foreign contaminates. The body then can readily eliminate the bound foreign contaminates through its own natural processes.

Toxins Removed:

  • Heavy Metal Toxicity
  • Lactic Acids
  • Pesticides/Fungicides
  • Cholesterol Deposits
  • Drugs/Medication Debris
  • Lymphatic Congestion
  • Cellular Debris
  • Exhaust Fumes
  • Parasites
  • Second Hand Smoke

Benefits:

  • Liver Detoxification
  • Increases Energy
  • Reduces Stress
  • Pain Relief
  • Improves Memory & Sleep
  • Sexual Health
  • Stronger Immune System
  • Oxygenates Your Cells
  • Better Well Being & Attitude
  • Calms & Relaxes

My Experience

Based on how your foot bath looks at the end of the session, tells you what toxins were pulled from your body through the pores of your feet. Common colors are orange for joint toxins, blue for hormonal toxins or black for liver toxins. Usually within your first few foot baths, the color will get darker, which indicates more toxins being released. As you continue to get the foot baths on a regular basis, the water should get lighter. I have had many foot baths. I have noticed this pattern occur in my foot baths. There was a time a few months ago my water was almost completely black. I noticed that my bath always has a heavy dose of colors specific to my “problem areas” of my body. I have had people sitting next to me with completely blue baths who tell me they have hormone problems and that their bath is always that color. Also based on my observation, usually older or those with serious illness have very dark baths, indicating high toxicity levels. Based on these observations it seems like there is some validity to the Ionic Foot Bath detox.
