Personalized Stretching at LYMBR

I was able to get in a stretch session at LYMBR’s new Hamptons location LYMBR Hamptons located in Bridgehampton at The BARN Soul Cycle

. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀

The space is serene with an outdoor seating area to relax or hangout before/after a session. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀

During my session, we stretched out my neck. This was the area I wanted to focus on. Because we only did my neck, I sat in the chair the whole session. They also have a table to lay on for other areas of the body. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀

I have been stretching out my neck a lot on my own recently and have been getting some relief from my neck pain by doing so. In order to get relief, I need a really deep stretch that can be painful and which I have to put a lot of effort on my own. It was really helpful to have Cesar (who was great btw) hold my shoulder in place while pulling my arm or neck in the other direction. Having someone stretch me really hits certain spots where I need it the most and can get into certain areas I wouldn’t be able to get into on my own. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀

⠀ ⠀

The movements LYMBR uses are designed to:

▫️increase flexibility

▫️improve range of motion ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ▫️expand myofascial pathways for greater oxygenation & circulation.

The guided stretches are performed in multiple repetitions and only held for a few seconds. Sessions are 30 or 60 min. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀

I felt some relief after the session, although I know it will take many more sessions for me to get more permanent relief. I did feel more relaxed and lighter after my session which was an added benefit. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀

I am a more recent proponent of stretching, working it into my routine, where I now stretch my full body a few times a week. I have noticed for me, it is necessary for injury prevention, helps maximize my strength and relaxes my mind. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀

Hibiscus Tea Bags As Natural Blush

🌺HIBISCUS TEA BAGS AS NATURAL BLUSH🌺Missing my tan/sunkissed look from Colombia. I started using Hibiscus tea bags to get a natural sunkissed look on days I am not putting face makeup on. I really look so different when I have a healthy tan or glow vs when I haven’t seen the sun in months. I only wear makeup a few times a week, mainly when I go out. I mainly just put some lipstick/stain on and recently like to also add the hibiscus to make my face look more lively. ⠀ ⠀

⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀

I was going for a subtle look, but you can also achieve a more red color if desired. This has been staying on super well for me! ⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀

You can also freeze the tea bags prior to. The frozen tea bags wakes up the skin and the hibiscus tighters and gives a natural flush ⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀

⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀

Other benefits of hibiscus for your skin:

🌺Helps with age spots

🌺Encourage an all round fresher, younger, smoother looking complexion. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀

🌺The natural acids present in Hibiscus help to purify the skin by breaking down dead skin and increasing cell turnover & can help to control acne breakouts.

Sunbathing & Natural Sunscreen

☀️When I was younger, I would bake out in the sun for HOURS at a time seeking a dark tan & didn’t use sunscreen. After learning about how many chemicals are in synthetic sunblock, I am not sure if loading up on the sunscreen would have caused more harm than good? ⠀⠀⠀⠀

Now, I have a whole different approach around sunbathing. I allow myself to get sun when I am walking around/in the ocean for about an hour or less & put a natural sunscreen on, or nothing on if I have a base tan. When I am not being “active”, I seek shade and also love using a hat & coverup to cover my chest/shoulders. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀

The sun IS good for us in healthy doses. I am Vitamin D deficient in winter months & it really affects my mood a TON. After being in the ocean/sun, my friends commented on my increased energy levels & overall mood change. There are also many studies that show that Vitamin D is super important for bone health. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀

I really loved @moonandbloom post from the other week. She is a Registered Herbalist. I share the same thoughts as her relating to ☀️. She recommends: “Exposing one’s eyes to the sun (safely in moderation) activates the pineal gland quite markedly, as we know from ancient practice of sun gazing. It’s so good for skin disorders and healing, and cleans & oxygenates the blood.

While the whole synthetic sunblock industry is WAY toxic to humans, animals, and the Earth, there are numerous plant oils with natural SPF. All skin types have their own unique thresholds for sun that can vary with age and genetics. When the sun is really strong, I like a blend of St. Johnswort oil (approx SPF 8), Sea Buckthorn oil (approx spf 30) & coconut oil (approx spf 4-6). Watch the amounts- the Sea Buckthorn & Johnswort will dye your skin orange.” ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀

Face: I used a sunscreen by Naturopathica for my face for the first time & loved it! On the Think Dirty app it is rated as a 1 out of 10 toxicity level.

Body: I used a natural sunscreen I bought in Costa Rica and really like! See below for ingredients.

Earthing/Grounding

Now that Spring is here, do you have any new goals set in accordance with the nice weather? Have you ever heard of Grounding or Earthing? One of my goals for the spring is to spend at least 15 minutes a day in nature on the days  I am not in the city. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀

What is Earthing?

According to Dr. Joseph Mercola, DO, walking barefoot on the earth can have many benefits. The body can obtain electrons by being in contact with the Earth. These electrons have antioxidant effects which can reduce inflammation in the body & can make the immune system function optimally. When you are in direct contact with the ground (walking, sitting, or laying down on the earth’s surface) the earth’s electrons are conducted to your body, bringing it to the same electrical potential as the earth. Modern lifestyle separates humans from physical contact with the earth. Research suggests that this disconnect may be a major contributor to physiological dysfunction and a lack of well being. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀

Some other benefits include: IMG-2793

  • Reducing chronic pain
  • Improving sleep
  • Relieving muscle tension and headaches.
  • Improving menstrual and female hormone symptoms
  • Speeding the healing process.
  • Improve blood pressure and cardiovascular arrhythmias
  • Improve autoimmune conditions

Allegedly, many on the Tour de France,(e.g. Lance Armstrong) used an earthing recovery bag to speed recovery and increase their quality of sleep while on this endurance race.

It make sense that the more humans are connected to nature, the better we feel.  This is true for me. Do you think this could be one of the reasons people sleep better while at the beach? ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀

There are reviews on amazon from the book “Earthing, The Most Important Health Discovery Ever” which I read through. People wrote about how grounding has changed them for the better. If you are interested, consider reading through some!

Reiki for Healing

Reiki is a spiritual, vibrational healing art used to promote balance in the human body with its roots in Japanese origin. The word Reiki comes from the Japanese word (Rei) which means “Universal Life” and (Ki) which means “Energy”. It is believed that a person’s “ki” or energy should be strong and free flowing. When this is true, a person’s body and mind are in a positive state of health. When the energy becomes blocked, it could lead to symptoms of physical or emotional imbalance.

A Reiki session is typically 60-90 minutes. Prior to the session, The Reiki Practitioner and client will usually discuss any particular problem or issue they are experiencing and ask them what they are hoping to achieve from their session. The last Reiki session I went to was a little over a year ago. Prior to the session, the practitioner mixed cards which I then pulled out from the deck. These cards were supposed to be relevant to my life. The cards I pulled are the ones shown on the photo to the right. We also went over the different chakras of the body and meanings associated with each.

During the session, the client will rest comfortably on a massage table on their back with their shoes removed. The Practitioner may apply a light touch during the session, hold their hands slightly above your body. A recipient of Reiki might feel a warming sensation or a tingling during the session or nothing at all but sheer relaxation. I had a large sense of emotion during the session and while the practitioners hands were hovering over me, I felt a heavy push of energy from her hands. The practitioner went over each chakra & my throat chakra felt specifically heavy. I also did Reiki a year prior to that a few times with a different practitioner and I felt very relaxed during the session and almost fell asleep.  This Reiki practitioner in particular was supposedly psychic. During the session she was speaking to me about whatever came to her while putting her hands over my body. A lot of it did not make sense at the time, but looking back, some of the things she was saying makes more sense now. I felt very overwhelmed after the session.

Reiki is a tool for stress reduction, relaxation and wellness. Reiki is not a cure for a disease or illness, but it may assist the body in creating an environment to facilitate healing.

It is interesting, I was watching this video on Reiki and it asks if you have a headache, stomach ache, or pain elsewhere most people’s reaction is to place their hands on the corresponding area.”Reiki amplifies and intensifies the power of touch”.

Our bodies are made up of energy. We exist in a universe of energy. This concept may be hard to understand for some people at first because we aren’t really taught this in school. However, everything in this world is essentially energy. For example, the difference between hot and cold water is energy right?

This photo was taken at Goddess Sanctuary & Spa in Mineola, Long Island. They also have Full & New Moon Meditation classes. If you go to my Instagram, @dshamptonorganics to this photo you can see some informative comments of people commenting about their (positive) experience with reiki.

CBD Pills

Finally tried CBD pills. What is CBD? Cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) are the two main ingredients in the marijuana plant. Both CBD and THC belong to a unique class of compounds known as cannabinoids.

THC is best known for being the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana. CBD, however, is non-psychoactive, meaning CBD can’t get you high. While disappointing to recreational users, this unique feature of CBD is what makes it so appealing as a medicine.

Naturally containing less than .3% THC, the hemp plant contains a multitude of nutrient rich terpenes, phytonutrients and cannabinoids.

Research seems to indicate that introducing hemp-derived cannabinoids such as CBD might help one’s ECS function more properly and efficiently and help regulate vital biological functions such as sleep, appetitie, pain, modulation, mood enhancement, sexual activity & more.

After taking a pill, I my body felt more relaxed and zen. For me, it seems like a good pill to take before bed.

Ananda Hemp works directly with the DEA and Kentucky Department of Agriculture in strict accordance with section 7606 of the 2014 Farm Bill. This allows them to sell and transport their products in all 50 states, legally. They are vertically integrated hemp producers in the USA and rigorously test and certify all products from seed to sale.

I also have used CBD oil topically (as seen in photo on the right). My friend made my a topical oil lotion mixed with coconut oil and some other ingredients beneficial to the skin. I am not sure if I noticed a difference, but something like this might need to be applied many times a day or may need to be of higher potency. For example, Voltaren gel, a topical prescription pain cream is recommended to be applied 6x a day.

I know some people personally who use this to treat chronic pain. Does anyone else take CBD pills or use a topical oil? How do you like them?

Here is the link to Ananda Hemp for CBD pills.

Squatting or Sitting? The correct posture in the Loo

Did you know that anatomically humans are designed to squat to eliminate? While squatting, the human body is at the ideal angle to straighten the colon for better elimination. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Western style toilets are designed for people to eliminate while sitting down on the toilet. In the seated angle, a kink is caused in the colon that makes it more difficult to go to the bathroom. (See “seated position” photo) This leaves unwanted body waste and toxins left in the colon. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀image1Step and Go is designed to mirror the angle and efficiency of natural squatting. It is simply placed under the toilet (as seen in below photo).

image3

Step and Go helps with:

🔹Hemorrhoids- Hemorrhoids are inflamed, swollen anal varicose veins due to pushing excessively to get those hard stools to pass. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀

🔹Colon disease- Eliminating frequently and completely helps maintain good colon health. Many studies show that fecal buildup in the colon can cause many diseases including colon cancer.

🔹Constipation- Constipation happens when there are hard, dry stools present. This can be caused by not having enough fiber or water in our diets along with improper toilet posture, not allowing us to eliminate completely.

🔹Appendicitis & Colitis

In an uncontrolled, unpublished study by the Mayo Clinic by Adil Bharucha M.B.B.S. M.D. it was suggested that a footstool improved bowel symptoms in 98% of 153 constipated participants. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀

I guess countries which have solely a hole in the floor instead of a toilet have a method to their madness.

The Warrior Mindset: Become Your Own Therapist with Subconscious Rewiring

I attended a very informative event this week “The Warrior Mindset” with Counselor and Cognitive Behavioral Therapist Kelly Armatage, at The Farm Soho. This was hosted by Vitamin R,  who hosts wellness events open to the public throughout the city.

Vitamin R also brings innovative leadership experts to corporations to improve their culture and improve employee wellness.

Throughout the two hour class, Kelly went over methods to help the class think like a Warrior, rather than think like a Victim. Some of the key differences between thinking like a Warrior and a Victim include:

Victim

  • Believes others are to blame for the pain

  • Live in frustration, sadness, anger, self-hate

  • Habits: over-giving, anger, codependency, lack, fear, passive-aggression, conflict, toxicity

  • Loves drama

  • Not aware of their power, thoughts, emotions and habits. Spiritually unaware.

Warrior

  • Are responsible for their life experience.

  • Resonate in confidence, compassion, self-love

  • Habits- self love, assertiveness, understanding, co-operation, respect, goal achievement

  • Have a CREATOR approach towards life

  • Knows there is a reason and life lesson behind all adversity

She taught us that we can learn how to think like a warrior because our thought patterns are learned and can be relearned. A neural pathway is a learned behavior. It is a highway in the brain that have been used so many times. People get a “high” when they carry out an act that is trained by their neural pathways. This could be a bad habit, like binge eating, or a good habit, like eating healthy. Our habits are trained on a neural pathway.

Kelly went through two different mind exercises with two volunteers in the class. The first volunteer went through a Cognitive Rewiring Technique to help her have optimistic thoughts on about a job search that was stressing her out. The second volunteer also was seeking a new job and went through a technique created by Kelly called the A.S.K Technique. This technique can be found on her website here.

Some other key points that I liked that were spoken about in the class were:

  • Heal the past with acceptance. Acceptance of the past creates acceptance of yourself today. Forgive yourself and your past. Do not judge yourself or your past.
  • Everyone is doing the best they can. You have the choice to either teach people how to treat you OR you can get distance from them.
  • When you remove resentful energy toward people, people will THEN change around us.
  • Manifest from the heart, not the mind. Once your heart opens, you will start to have things happen that you want to happen.

After the class, I had a feeling of empowerment and felt a sense of control over my life.

5 Tips to Spring Clean your Soul before Summer

We have a little over a month of Spring time, the season of new beginnings. Take full advantage of Spring  by accomplishing these five suggestions below from The Neijing and Marie Kondo. The Neijing is one of the most vital texts in Daoism (or Taoism) & considered one of the fundamental backbones of Chinese Medicine. It is written from the perspective of Huang Di, known as The Yellow Emperor who retired in the third millennium BCE. Marie Kondo is a famous Japanese professional organizational consultant.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀

  1. Go to bed early & wake up early

  2. Take walks to enjoy the fresh air

Huang Di said, “The three months of the spring season bring about the revitalization of all things in nature. It is the time of birth. This is when heaven and earth are reborn. During this season it is advisable to retire early, arise early also, and go walking in order to absorb the fresh, invigorating energy. Since this is the season in which the universal energy begins anew and rejuvenates, one should attempt to correspond to it directly by being open and unsuppressed, both physically and emotionally.”

If you are having trouble going to bed earlier here are some tips:

  • Have an incentive to get into bed, such as a good book you are excited about reading.
  • Light a candle or diffuse some essential oils scented with lavender which smells good and helps you relax
  • Make you bed in the morning, that way your bed is more enticing to get into
  • Get into bed and listen to a relaxing meditation. Insight Timer is a good app or Louise Hay on YouTube.

   3. Exercise more frequently (if you were hibernating in the winter)

   4. Wear loose fitting clothing ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

“On the physical level it is good to exercise more frequently and wear loose-fitting clothing. This is the time to do stretching exercises to loosen up the tendons and muscles. Emotionally, it is good to develop equanimity. This is because spring is the season of the liver, and indulgence in anger, frustration, depression, sadness, or any excess emotion can injure the liver”. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀

Spring is the beginning of things, when the energy should be kept open and fluid; summer opens up further into an exchange or communication between internal and external energies; in the fall it is important to conserve; finally, the winter is dominated by the storage of energy.”

      5. Get organized

If you haven’t done your spring cleaning yet, now is the time! Spring is all about new beginnings and is the perfect time to get organized and de-clutter your house/apartment which also helps to de-clutter your mind.
I read the book “The Lifechanging Magic of Tidying Up” by a professional Japanese Organizing Consultant, Marie Kondo. After I got rid of unused items and organized my items, I was inspired to get organized in other areas of my life. Ex: writing down to-do lists and being more consistent with calendar items. Writing to-do items seemed to make me less stressed without the pressure of having to remember so many things.
The idea behind Kondo’s method of tidying up is to only keep items that give us joy and toss items that do not genuinely give us joy. ⠀⠀⠀
It works! When I am in my bed about to go to sleep and my room is clean, clutter free and filled with items and clothes that I really like and respect, I feel calmer and happier. When I have items I am holding on to that I am not excited about having, it is like having extra baggage or weight added to my room, which I feel when I am around these objects.
Kondo recommends for people to go through this process by themselves in order to fully get a good feeling from the purge. I did feel a sense of relief when cleaning out my items. If you are not great at organizing, It is a good idea to go through your items on your own, as Kondo recommends and to get a professional to help organize. Sound Healing Meditation

I had an amazing experience at Sound Healing Meditation class by Rick Batyr Music last weekend at Point Lookout Yoga Club on Long Island, New York. This class used gongs, drums and Tibetan singing bowls, which date back to being used in ancient history.  These instruments are ‘stuck and sung’ in specific rythmic patterns to create vibrational sound harmonics. These vibrations from the sound frequency impact the sympathetic nervous system. During the class, your brain waves synchronize to the vibrations of the instruments being played. The harmonic vibrations engage the relaxation reflex and slow down the respiratory, brain and heart rate and create a deep sense of well being.

I was extremely relaxed during the class. I have been to meditation classes before where my mind has difficulty not wandering and staying focused on the meditation. During this class, my mind was clear of distracting thoughts. I felt relaxed and at ease. I really like the bong sounds. It was hard to have a wandering mind when something that loud and vibrational was being played. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀

There was also a Reiki practitioner in the class who did Reiki during the meditation. Reiki, meaning “universal life energy” in Japanese works with the goal of improving the flow of life energy in a person. Reiki practitioners are trained to detect and alleviate problems of energy flow on the physical, emotional, and spiritual level.

Below is an interview with Rick Batyr. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀FullSizeRender(13)
D’s Hampton Organics: Could you tell me more about what you offer as a service?

Rick Batyr: I am a musician/sound healer/teacher, with a background in studying shamanism, reiki, meditation and the science of sound.
I perform live group sound meditations using gongs, singing bowls, percussion, synthesizer and field recording’s from nature all combined with the above practices. The sonic landscapes I create has helped many to detach from the ego self which allows you to gently slip into a deeply relaxing meditative state. The intention behind all my work is to honor each individuals unique vibration, guiding them into a state of self awareness, joy and compassion.

As a musician I create fully produced meditation music combining traditional sound healing modalities with artful sonic exploration. Each song infuses many forms of sounds, blurring the lines of genre and taking the listener on a healing journey.

D’s Hampton Organics: How did you originally get involved in what you do?

Rick Batyr: Using music as a therapeutic tool began early on for me (A drummer in my teenage years). I would always turn to music in times of stress, playing music and being immersed in sounds would simply take me away into a sort of trance like state.
When I was about 16 yrs old I began meditation and spiritual practices. From that turning point the next 10 years focused on self discovery, growing spiritually and delving into the science and spiritual use of sound. In the studio I was creating bin-aural beats, studying music from around the world and learning how the brain responds to sound.
After graduating in 2000 with a degree in audio engineering I began working full time in Manhattan for major recording studios and artists and would often attend group meditations around there. The deeper I went down the spiritual path, the further I started to step away from the commercial side of the music industry.
When my wife Mariko began to train me in Usui Reiki it all seemed to collide together. Reiki broadened my awareness of energy and brought another layer to the energetic use of music that I was discovering. With the years of studying the science of sound, along with these new spiritual tools, I was set on a path to share the healing power of music with the world.

D’s Hampton Organics: Why do you like meditation/sound meditation and what differentiates the two? Why is sound special?

Rick Batyr: I love meditation. In its simplest form its great for heightening your awareness, acting mindfully and balancing stress/emotions. On the deeper level It allows you to step beyond the ego , heal and explore the more complex levels of the inner self, enhance creativity, and connect to divine source.
When you add carefully crafted music to meditation, it greatly enhances the experience on multi-dimensional levels. The Meditative use of sound dates back thousands of years, in many forms throughout the world. Music and rhythm is ingrained into our being from the the earliest days of our existence (16 weeks in utero) . Listening to the beats of our mothers heart, hearing the swish of air into the lungs, etc. We are designed to respond and resonate to sound. We are all divine instruments that constantly need to be “tuned up” as we change and evolve. Using music helps to quiet the mind during meditation, lowers blood pressure, improves sleep, enhances your listening and focusing abilities. Sound can help to reveal our inner emotional, energetic, physical/mental patterns and blocks.

D’s Hampton Organics: Could you further explain Reiki and how you use it in your classes.

Rick Batyr: My wife Mariko Zervos Batyr (www.zersai.com) has been practicing and teaching Reiki for many years, With a deep connection to her Japanese heritage, she has this incredible ability to bring fourth Usui Reiki in the most respectful, egoless and pure manner I have seen. Learning Reiki from Mariko truly opened me up to a new layer of understanding energy as a healing modality. Since music is also energy, I began using reiki energy while conducting sound healing sessions, as well as during the writing process of my recorded albums. Before I begin a sound healing session or compose music I give all my instruments reiki, with the intention that as I play that energy is carried out into the listener along with the sound waves of the music.

D’s Hampton Organics: Could you further explain chakras and how you use them in your classes?

Rick Batyr: The chakra system is often misunderstood in the west. Here, we boil an ancient yogic practice down to a single set of 7 chakras that govern the body, when traditionally the original practice used many many more sets of chakras. Since the chakras mainly deal with our energetic non physical bodies the locations and notes that pertain to the chakra system can fluctuate based on the individual. With that said I do not use one specific note or frequency for every single person as many chakra systems in the west teach. If you believe, as I do, that every human being is beautifully unique in his/her grand design, then applying the same prescription to everyone just simply does not work. I use mostly metal singing bowls because they provide complex overtones and harmonics that crystal bowls do not. It is those overtones and harmonics when struck in certain patterns or scales begin to create a wall of sound that encompasses many notes and vibrations that help to cover not just the main western whole tones associated with the chakra system but many of the sounds in between those notes. As the conductor of these deep sonic journeys I feel its my responsibility to cover as many modalities and sounds as possible regardless of personal beliefs, so that I can assist as many as possible with this work.
